1919 Egypt, Damietta city

Some historians and archaeologists mention that Lower Egypt in the Pharaonic era was divided into 20 provinces. Damietta was the seventeenth province, and its ancient Egyptian name was "Tamhet," meaning "Land of the North," or "Tem Ati," meaning "City of Water" or "City of the Watercourse."

Damietta came under Greek rule as one of the Egyptian cities after Alexander the Great conquered Egypt in 332 BC. The Ptolemies then ruled it until the Roman Empire occupied it in 30 BC. Trade and cultural relations between Damietta and the Greek people increased, as a large number of scholars, writers, and tourists migrated there, interested in studying Egyptian history, antiquities, customs, and traditions. It remained under Greek rule for three centuries and was called "Tamiyatis."

When Christianity entered Egypt, churches spread in Damietta, especially during the reign of Emperor Constantine in 325 AD. It was a large bishopric with a bishop representing it at international religious conferences. The name "Tamiats" was transformed into "Tamiat," which is said to mean in ancient Egyptian "the northern land that grows flax."

During the reign of Muhammad Ali and his family:
When Muhammad Ali assumed power in Egypt in 1805 AD, Damietta was the most important and commercially significant Egyptian port, with a population of 30,000. It was a major warehouse for commodities such as rice, and canals and bridges were constructed there. A spinning and weaving factory was also established in Damietta. The Egyptian leader Omar Makram was exiled to Damietta, and Muhammad Ali visited the city in 1818 AD.

Damietta became a governorate in 1954, following Presidential Decree No. 1755 of 1960.
