1980 Saudi Arabia, Jeddah - Al Balad

Saudi Arabia, Jeddah | 1980

In 1971, the residents of Jeddah, particularly those in the Al-Balad district, experienced a transformation in their traditional buying and selling practices. Previously, transactions involved strolling among a network of open-air shops stretching for five kilometers, from Bab Makkah in the east to Qabil Street in the west, passing through several old markets. This new system was ushered in by a modern building known as "The Queen's Building."

This transformation added economic and cultural dimensions to the city, and the building later became a historical landmark for Jeddah residents and visitors alike. Thus, "The Queen's Building" became the primary gateway to the heart of history, or what is known as "Old Jeddah."

The Queen's Building, designed by architect Joseph Karan and constructed in 1971 by the Italian firm Celsio, established a new standard for shopping and business transactions, setting international standards unprecedented at the time. This led major global companies to open marketing offices within the building. The building also contributed to showcasing Jeddah's economic growth, moving away from scattered and dispersed retail outlets and consolidating all types of goods and products in one location.

The building was once a majestic sight, visible from kilometers away on the road to the old city center, its appearance breathtaking. However, with the passage of time and the economic boom, it faded behind towering buildings and shopping malls. Nevertheless, it remains a key landmark, guiding visitors to the heart of historic Jeddah, and a hub for business transactions on its upper floors.
