Located in the heart of the Pacific Ocean within the Polynesian region, Samoa is considered one of the most beautiful and culturally distinctive island nations in Oceania. Formerly known as “Western Samoa,” the country officially adopted its current name in 1997. Samoa mainly consists of two principal islands, Upolu and Savai‘i, along with several smaller islands, while Apia serves as the capital and largest urban center.
Human settlement in Samoa dates back more than 3,500 years, when the Lapita people migrated from Southeast Asia and helped shape the foundations of Polynesian civilization and traditional Samoan culture. Historically, Samoans were renowned for their exceptional seafaring and navigation skills, which led early European explorers to refer to the islands as the “Navigator Islands.”
Samoa came under German colonial rule in the late nineteenth century and was later administered by New Zealand during World War I. The nation eventually gained full independence in 1962, becoming the first Polynesian country to achieve independence in the twentieth century. Samoa later joined the United Nations in 1975.
The country is celebrated for its breathtaking tropical landscapes, including rainforests, waterfalls, volcanic formations, and turquoise beaches. Samoa enjoys a warm tropical climate throughout the year and relies economically on agriculture, fishing, tourism, and remittances sent by Samoans living abroad. Among its most notable exports are coconuts, coconut oil, and noni fruit products.
Despite its relatively small size and population, Samoa is internationally admired for its natural beauty, rich heritage, and the hospitality of its people. It is often referred to as the “Heart of Polynesia” for embodying the authentic spirit and traditions of the Pacific Islands.
