1943 Tuvalu, During World War II

Tuvalu has only one airport, likely established during World War II for military operations. It was later converted into a civilian airport serving arrivals and departures to and from Tuvalu.

It is also arguably the only airport in the world open to the public and without perimeter walls, unlike most other airports. The runway is used as a football field and sports field for Tuvaluans at the end of the day after flights have arrived and departed.
