The Allied forces landed on the Crimean Peninsula with the objective of capturing Sevastopol, the main base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. After defeating the Russians at the Battle of the Alma, the Allies fought several major engagements, including the Battles of Balaclava and Inkerman, before beginning the siege of Sevastopol, which lasted for nearly a year.
