Turkey, Mount Pagos, Izmir (Smirna) in 1870

The Turkish city of Izmir was formerly called Smyrna (Smirna), but the name was altered over time until it became known as Izmir.

Smyrna (Greek: Σμύρνη; Ottoman Turkish: Smirna; Turkish: Smirna) is an ancient Greek city located on the western coast of Anatolia, on the Mediterranean coast. The city was founded in the 11th century BC. Its ruins are located within the Turkish city of Izmir.

Smyrna was named after an Amazon, and was also formerly a neighborhood of Ephesus.
