Egypt, Sultan Hassan Mosque, Cairo, 1849
A rare photograph taken by French photographer Maxime du Camp during his visit to Egypt in the mid-nineteenth century. This photograph shows the Sultan Hassan Mosque in Ramla Square (the Citadel) from the rear of the mosque, before the construction of the Al-Rifai Mosque. Some of these houses were expropriated and the Al-Rifai Mosque was built in their place at a later date than the date of this photograph. Cairo, 1849-1850 AD
