Palestine, Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, 1839
The first photograph of the Holy City of Jerusalem, Palestine, was taken in 1839 AD.
As you can see, the photograph looks like a painted painting!
This is due (as we mentioned in the case of the first photographs of Egypt taken in the same year by the same photographer) to the technology used in photography at the time. The photograph was taken on a silver plate, and then a painter was assigned to enhance the clarity of the image, making it appear as if it were a painted painting.
