Egypt, Al-Wady Temple - Pyramids of Giza, 1862
The Prince of Wales’ Visit to the Pyramids of Giza – 1862
On the evening of March 4, 1862, just before sunset, Edward, Prince of Wales – later King Edward VII of England – arrived at the Giza Plateau. He was accompanied by the renowned photographer Francis Bedford and several members of the Batrān tribe of the pyramids.
The group paused in awe before the timeless stone colossus, standing as it had for thousands of years. Bedford quickly prepared his equipment to capture one of the earliest and rarest photographic records of the pyramids, along with a series of images documenting the prince’s journey through Egypt.
That night, a small camp of two tents was set up at the base of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, where they stayed until dawn, in preparation for the prince’s climb to the summit at sunrise.
Among Bedford’s remarkable works from this visit are photographs of the Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Valley Temple—four of which survive today in excellent quality, preserving the memory of this royal encounter with Egypt’s ancient wonders more than 160 years ago.
