Great Sphinx in 1872

The image reflects a rare scene from nineteenth-century Egypt: a man sits resting in the shade of the Sphinx at Giza in 1872 , at a time when the area was still far from the bustle of modern crowds and mass tourism.

In that era, the Sphinx was part of an almost empty desert landscape, with sand covering large portions of its body up to about the middle. Many European travelers and photographers of the time, such as Antonio Beato and Félix Bonfils, captured similar images showing people sitting or resting beside the monument, highlighting the awe and tranquility of the place.
