Qalawun Eye Hospital in Cairo, 1887

One of the foreign travelers once described Cairo at the beginning of the last century, saying:

"If you wish to enjoy the charm of Vienna, the modernity of Paris, and the heritage of Istanbul — go to Cairo."

And when we speak of heritage, we must mention the Qalawun Bimaristan in Cairo — the historic Eye Hospital founded by Sultan al-Mansur Sayf al-Din Qalawun in 1284 AD. Remarkably, it still operates today as a hospital affiliated with the Egyptian Ministry of Health.

According to the French writer Jomard in Description de l’Égypte, during its golden age each patient at the Mansuri Bimaristan cost one dinar per day for treatment and had two attendants at their service.

Patients suffering from insomnia were moved to special halls where they listened to rhythmic music or were entertained by skilled storytellers. Once a patient recovered, they were separated from the others and given five gold coins upon discharge.
