Rare picture of the oldest lighthouse in Crater Yemen, Aden 1880
Crater Lighthouse – Aden 1880 A Sailor's Guide and Eyes of Empire
This rare photograph captures an exceptional view of the oldest lighthouse in the Crater area, the heart of the coastal city of Aden, as it appeared in 1880, during the early days of British rule in the city. This lighthouse played an important role in guiding commercial and military vessels arriving at the port of Aden, which was then one of the most important British ports on the route to India.
The lighthouse represents an example of early colonial naval architecture. It was built by the British after the occupation of Aden in 1839 as part of the maritime navigation system that enhanced Aden's importance as a strategic maritime and commercial center in the Arabian Sea.
Located within the mountainous Crater area, the lighthouse is distinguished by its simple yet effective design, reflecting the balance between military necessity and architectural precision at a time when technology was not as advanced as it is today.
At this time, Aden was politically separate from North Yemen
(which was ruled by the Zaidi Imamate in Sana'a), and Yemen was not yet unified. Aden was directly under British administration and was considered the nucleus of what would later become "South Yemen" before the country was unified in 1990.
