oldest photo taken house village Aden 1855

This photograph is one of the oldest documented photographs of Aden, taken in 1855 by the renowned French artist and sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834–1904), later internationally known as the designer of the Statue of Liberty in New York City.

This photograph was taken during Bartholdi's first trip to the Middle East, where he accompanied a number of European orientalists on an exploratory tour that lasted between 1855 and 1856. The tour included several Yemeni cities and ports, including Al Hudaydah, Al Mokha, and Aden. During this trip, Bartholdi was not only a painter but also a rare visual documenter of scenes from the Arabian Peninsula, rarely found in historical photographic archives.

The importance of this photograph is not only due to its antiquity, but also because it captures a visual aspect of the city's life during a critical period in its history, decades before British colonialism fully established its influence over southern Yemen. Bartholdi succeeded in freezing a moment in time, reflecting the depth of the geography and culture of the place, at a time when cameras were not common or available to everyone.
